Optical Harmonics Equine Photography Guild

It started so very simply. I would try to take photos of my wife and her ridding buddy Diana as they traversed the trails at LBJ Grasslands. After a few times of being humbled by both the speed and attention of riding teams I ask for help from a long time friend and photography addict Mike Collins. Soon we were both hiking through the bushes, fighting off insects and trying to avoid poison ivy all for a better shot.  We soon learned that photographing horses is difficult and poison ivy is hard to see. However as photographing birds is even more difficult we stayed with horses. Besides Cheryl and Diana would buy us coffee and snacks!

For some strange reason a ride manager asked me to get serious and be the “official” photographer for an event. Official anything scares me, but saying no to an intensely busy ride manager scares me even more. Thankfully Todd Peterson also jumped to help so there were more of us to blame if things went drastically wrong. Even though I made some dumb mistakes the images actually turned out to be acceptable to the riders and staff so we were hooked.

During the following rides and shows others have helped share the joy of photographing horseback events.  All of us have a different style and use different equipment.  While we may not agree on the best camera, lighting or background, we all agree equine photography is both enjoyable and satisfying.  And heck, we still get free coffee.

This web site was built to distribute the images we take to the ride participants and staff. The horse and rider team is a special relationship that we are allowed to intrude upon in an attempt to capture the moment. I sincerely thank you for the opportunity to apply our God given skills to your events.
